GLOSSARY OF CARE TERMS

The Same As You?

The Same as You - a plan by the Scottish government for improving the lives of those with Learning Disabilities in Scotland.

Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care Services (the Care Commission)

Statutory body in Scotland who regulate and inspect care providers to ensure compliance with regulations.

Care Coordinator

Someone who works in the office and organises the care worker rotas. Also takes referrals and general enquiries.

Care Manager

Oversees and is responsible for the Care Workers, quality of care, supervising staff, training staff, and managing the office amongst other things.

Care Provider

A company or charity (big or small) who provides a care service to individuals.

Carer

Someone who looks after a person or family without payment; usually means a partner, parent, sibling or friend.

Client

Someone who uses our services; also called a service user.

CRB

Criminal Records Bureau, in England, the body that reports on criminal convictions.

CSCI

Commission for Social Care Inspection; Statutory body in England who regulate and inspect care providers to ensure compliance with regulations.

CSIW

Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales - Statutory body in Wales who regulate and inspect care providers to ensure compliance with regulations.

Direct Payments

A way of paying for care. Instead of Social Services choosing who gives the care, this allows a person to choose for themselves who can look after them.

Disclosure Scotland

Organisation, in Scotland, the body that reports on criminal convictions.

Domiciliary

At home or in the home.

Field Care Supervisor

Supervises Care Workers and assesses Service Users to make sure care given is appropriate.

Franchise

An office that is operating under licence by a franchisor.

Franchisee

The owner of the franchise.

GSCC

General Social Care Council provide best practice guidance to care providers and employees.

Independent Living Fund

Can be a source of funding for people with disabilities to enable them to pay for any care and support they may need.

LDAF

Learning Disabilities Awards Framework. A set of competencies that Care Workers work towards if they provide care and support to those with a learning disability.

NVQ / SVQ

National Vocational Qualification / Scottish Vocational Qualification; can be in many subjects and up to NVQ level 4.

PCT

Primary Care Trust; 1 of the 2 types of NHS trusts; in charge of funding for hospitals and social care within a certain geographical area.

Police Check

A report on any criminal convictions undertaken by the Criminal Records Bureau or Disclosure Scotland.

Practical Support

Support where help is given with the everyday practical things; like getting up each day, or going to the shops.

Rehabilitation

Helping people who have been out of the usual 'society' for any number of reasons, including drug addiction, Mental Health illness or long term physical illness, cope with everyday life.

Respite Care

Where a care worker or someone else provides care, enabling the carer to take a break (can be days or weeks).

Sensory Impairments

A term used to describe a situation where one or more of the senses are not working as they should.

Service User

A health or social care term for someone who receives the care.

Social Services

Department of the local authority (Council) that deals with all elements of services relating to care, amongst other issues.

UKHCA

United Kingdom Home Care Association; an association of care providers (not just Carewatch) that gives guidance to care providers and members also represents members to press, government.

Valuing People

A document by the English government, which lays out a plan for improving the lives of people with Learning Disabilities.
