Carers get through despite the riots
24 August 2011
One group of people who braved the streets in the face of civil unrest were Carewatch carers. They faced the threat of angry mobs and violent behaviour to ensure that terrified service users received the support they needed at home.
Many older and vulnerable people, some of whom have learning disabilities and acute mental health problems rely on visits from Carewatch, which provides nearly 30,000 hours of care every day across the UK.
Carewatch Chief Executive David Lyon said: “I’ve spoken to our teams at a number of our branches, and it just never occurred to anyone there not to go out and do their duty this week. Many of them walked to their service users when public transport was stopped whilst others teamed up to ensure our services were uninterrupted. I am immensely proud of them.”
In addition to providing their normal services, the carers spent time phoning service users’ relatives to assure them their loved ones were safe, and double checking doors and windows were locked and secure before they left.
