Dignity Action Day 2012
01 February 2012
Today is Dignity Action Day, a day for raising awareness of the importance of dignity in care and that it is a basic human right, not an optional extra. At Carewatch, this has always been at the core of our values - to preserve and maintain individual's independence, dignity, choice, and control.
Home care workers, supervisors, head office staff, and many others are signing up to be Dignity Champions to raise awareness. You do not have to be a care worker to be a Dignity Champion; Dignity Champions are willing to:
- stand up and challenge disrespectful behaviour rather than just tolerate it;
- act as good role models by treating other people with respect, particularly those who are less able to stand up for themselves;
- speak up about Dignity to improve the way that services are organised and delivered;
- influence and inform colleagues;
- listen to and understand the views and experiences of citizens.

There are awareness raising events happening all over the UK; Steve Varney, manager of Carewatch (Always There) Leicester and his team held a coffee morning to raise awareness for Dignity Action day with lots of lovely cakes, see photos below! They invited service users, contracts staff, and social workers to come, and are signing people up to become dignity champions.
Steve comments "This morning went really well, we got everyone taking about dignity; our service users, staff, and some social workers came in. We would also like to thank every body who made all the lovely cakes! Our service users in particular enjoyed the cakes so we gave them some to take home too."
