Home Care Worker Saves 90 Year Old from Bed Fire

02 December 2011

Teenage Care Worker, Rachael Wilks from Carewatch Sheffield saved her 90-year-old client from burning alive in his bed.

Rachael, aged 18 was busy preparing the elderly man’s breakfast in the kitchen at his home when she heard noises coming from the lounge where he sleeps. Concerned, she rushed into the lounge to see what was happening and found that his bed was on fire.

Quick thinking Rachael, pulled the 90 year old away from the flames which had started because he was smoking in his bed.

The fire was consuming his bed so Rachael bravely put it out with water. Once the fire had been extinguished, she opened the windows for ventilation, and then telephoned for help.

When Fire-fighters arrived, Rachael had already saved her service user, and done everything possible to make the situation safe.

Commended by fire chiefs, Rachael has been awarded with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of her quick thinking and bravery.
